Blockchain Technology in Banking: An Empirical Study on Challenges and Opportunities Perceived by Bank Managers in Gujarat

Abstract

Blockchain technology has emerged as a transformative innovation in the global banking and financial services sector, offering enhanced transparency, security, efficiency and cost reduction in transactions. In the Indian banking context, particularly in Gujarat, the adoption of blockchain presents both significant opportunities and notable challenges. This study aims to examine the perception of bank management regarding the challenges and opportunities associated with blockchain adoption. The study also analyses the association between the demographic profile of bank management and their perception towards blockchain technology in banking. The research is empirical in nature and is based on primary data collected from 169 bank managers across Gujarat through a structured close-ended questionnaire. The study evaluates key aspects such as awareness level, perceived benefits, implementation barriers, regulatory concerns, technological readiness and risk factors related to blockchain integration in banking operations. Statistical tools such as descriptive analysis and association tests are used to interpret the data. The findings are going to provide into the readiness of banking institutions in Gujarat to adopt blockchain technology and highlight the influence of demographic factors on managerial perception. The study contributes to understanding the strategic implications of blockchain adoption and may assist policymakers, banking institutions and technology providers in formulating effective implementation strategies..
